The sand leader is designed to ride above the sand at the bottom of the manhole. It’s curved wings allow it to rotate without digging in. The front hole also serves as a cable pull hole (bucket machines) as they are designed to remove the sand mechanically.

Sand traps have been used for years to trap the sand in the manhole before it goes downstream. Insert one end in horizontal position into the downstream line, the water will rise up over the vertical end and continue downstream but the sand will accumulate around the trap for removal.
